Residential Care Homes versus Assisted Living Facilities

So often caregivers are pressed to determine whether or not a family member is best to live in a residential care home or a large assisted living facility (ALF).  Here are some helpful thoughts to consider when trying to determine your best option.

  • Personality. Is the potential resident sociable?  My father-in-law loves to talk with different people everywhere we go.  He thrives to interact with different personalities.  He would be appropriate in a large assisted living facility when the time comes.
  • Activities. Would the potential resident thrive from activities.  Residential care homes have limited activities because they generally house under ten residents.
  • Cost.  Residential care homes are more willing to negotiate pricing in my experience as corporate organizations have required guidelines.
